Helpful tips for holiday estate planning discussions

It may be difficult to believe, but Labor Day weekend is just over a week away. What is largely observed as the last summer holiday will be marked with family gatherings. If you know anything about family gatherings, you tend to learn more about your family every time, which make these events prime opportunities to discuss estate planning.

Like all things involving family, there are boundaries and protocols to these discussions. For those who are new to our blog, we will revisit some of our helpful tips to holding conversations about estate planning during a holiday gathering.

Start by discussing a current event – Celebrity news stories and current events are good ways to broach the topic of estate planning. Indeed, most people don’t have the money celebrities have but the issues can be common.

Talk about values – Estate planning is not just about property and money, even though these are prime issues in family estate squabbles. Instead, having discussions about values and legacies may be better ways of understanding how estate planning can be beneficial.

Know a person’s limits –A good estate plan cannot be forged in one conversation. It is a process, that may not resolved in a short amount of time. As such, patience must be exercised in discussing estate planning. A person may not want to engage in such a conversation again at a family gathering.  It would not be in good taste to discourage a loved one from establishing a will or trust.

If you have additional questions about estate planning discussions, an experienced attorney can advise you.
